‘Uncle Joe’ Might Be Just What Americans Need After Trump Chaos
I have to admit that I was not a fan of Vice President Joe Biden. (Sen. Elizabeth Warren was my candidate.) I thought he was too old, too slow, and lacked media savvy. (I shared these points in a previous article.) Biden had also run for president several times before and failed.
I thought his time had passed. But somehow he pulled out a victory and won the Democratic nomination. So I took a second look at Biden and realized that he just might be able to pull off an electoral victory in November.
Here are the reasons why:
Joe Knows the System
Biden is the anti-Trump. Donald Trump’s election was supposedly about shaking up the system, trying something new and bringing in a businessman to run the government. That was all BS. Trump is a con artist, he sold those lies to Americans because he’s an expert media manipulator. In reality, he was a terrible businessman, and never successfully ran a large organization. And even large businesses are dwarfed in comparison to the size of the federal government.
People want a return to normalcy. They want a leader who knows what he’s doing, understands how to operate the tools of government and respects the presidency. That’s Biden, who’s the opposite of the daily madness of the Trump show. Biden also oversaw the economic recovery team in 2009, a skill that will come in handy after he cleans up Trump’s mess.
Anyone who can analyze empirical data and think critically can see the Trump administration has been a disaster. The administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic is just the latest of the monthly atrocities. Did you forget about the migrant detention camps, sharing classified information with Russia, shoving the prime minister of Montenegro at a NATO meeting, or letting Saudia Arabia off the hook after they dismembered an American permanent resident?
People want a return to normalcy. They want a leader who knows what he’s doing, understands how to operate the tools of government and respects the presidency. That’s Biden, who’s the opposite of the daily madness of the Trump show. Biden also oversaw the economic recovery team in 2009, a skill that will come in handy after he cleans up Trump’s mess.
Republicans For Biden
Another important factor Biden has going for him is that he can attract Republican voters. The far-left might accuse Biden of being an establishment Democrat, who thinks and acts like a liberal Republican, but that might be an asset. Some Republicans have tired of the chaos of the Trump administration and want stability. And they see that in Biden. Biden isn’t a far-left radical like Sen. Bernie Sanders. (Some Republicans would rather vote for the Devil than a democratic socialist, hence Trump.)
There is also the element of sexism too. That’s why many male voters chose Trump, a con man, over Hillary Clinton, an experienced politician. They figured a male shyster was better than a woman, and so they rolled the dice with Trump.
Biden is a good old boy, for better or worse. He’s someone they can work with. That’s why some of the most effective anti-Trump/pro-Biden ads are coming from the Lincoln Project, a group of never Trumpers including George Conway, husband of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, and former Republican strategist Rick Wilson. They both realize Trump has to go for the sake of American democracy.
“We are proud to endorse @JoeBiden for President,” said the group in a tweet. “As America contends with unprecedented loss, we need a leader who can steady the ship, heal our common wounds, and lead us into our next national chapter. Joe Biden has the humanity, empathy and steadiness we need in a leader.”
Wilson, who authored “Everything Trump Touches Dies,” is one of the president’s harshest critics.
“Donald Trump isn’t a Republican, he isn’t a conservative, and he isn’t a patriot. He lacks even the most fundamental patriotic principles to put the country before himself,” said Wilson in a May 8 Washingtonian interview.
Biden Will Get the Backing of Black Voters
One of the reasons why Hillary lost in 2016 was because black voters stayed home. According to Pew Research, black voter turnout dropped by 7 percentage points.
Some of them listened to the Russian propaganda, spread on Facebook, and decided they couldn’t vote for someone who had helped expand mass incarceration. Instead of holding their noses and voting for Hillary, who they could have got something out of, they stayed home and enabled the election of a president who urged police to rough up suspects and called neo-Nazis good people!
Biden was also involved in the 1994 crime bill, but he has strong support from the African-American community who admire his close relationship with President Barack Obama. Biden can effectively sew up the black vote, if he nominates an African-American woman for vice president.
He can Bring the Country Together
Finally, Biden can bring the country back together. At the end of the day, Democrats and Republicans are both Americans and they should be working together for the benefit of the country. There was a time when both parties could argue over issues on the floor and then meet up for drinks after work.
However, those days are long gone. Partisanship has gotten so bad, that parties almost operate like opposing sides in a civil war. For example, Trump said that he would refuse to unveil the official portrait of Obama at the White House. Trump is breaking a 40-year tradition.
Biden harkens back to the time when politicians put aside their differences, muddled through and came up with working compromises. Wouldn’t it be nice to return to that, instead of turning on the TV and wondering what presidential outrage you’re going to be hit with today?
Unlike the Bernie Bros, who seem to be willing to cut their noses off to spite their faces, I’m willing to compromise. I’ve come to accept that we probably won’t get many of the issues on the liberal agenda passed through Biden. But I’m willing to trade that in return for having a working democracy again!
