GoFundMe Wall Campaign Creator Buys Into Republican Immigration Lies
I’ve already written about Brian Kolfage, the veteran who has raised $16 million for Trump’s border wall without any thought about how to get it to the government. In an interview with Azcentral.com, Kolfage said he created the crowdfunding campaign because he was concerned about the flaws in the immigration system.
He also said he had no problem with people coming here legally and the system needed to be amended so people who came in through the front door could quickly get their papers.
“They (legal immigrants) came here the right way,” said Kolfage. “They came through the front door. They did everything correctly and that’s what America is all about.”
However, Kolfage is either being dishonest or dense when he fails to understand the real motives behind Republicans’ immigration policy.
Kolfage repeated the Republican mantra of being in favor of legal immigration. But, the Trump administration doesn’t just want highly-skilled immigrants, they want educated, white immigrants. The GOP’s immigration policy wants to maintain this country’s white majority.
And Trump has said this several times. When he made the comment about “shi*thole countries” he was referring to African, Haiti and South American countries. It didn’t matter if immigrants were educated or not, he just wanted them to be white so they wouldn’t change America’s demographics. (Black and brown people also tend to vote Democrat.)
The barely literate Trump has a myopic view of the world. He seems to think that African immigrants are fresh out of the trees and can’t provide anything of value to this country. However, immigrants from Nigeria are known for being amazing scholars and have higher degree attainment rates than the average American. According to Rice University, 17 percent of Nigerians have advanced degrees, and many of them are in the Science Technology Education and Math (S.T.E.M) fields. That’s why many of them work in the medical field, as do both of my siblings. My dad is a retired college professor who taught biochemistry.
When he made the comment about “shi*thole countries” he was referring to African and South American countries. It didn’t matter if immigrants were educated or not, he just wanted them to be white so they wouldn’t change America’s demographics.
If the Trump administration was truly looking for highly-skilled immigrants they would award more visas and green cards to immigrants from Nigeria and India, a country that churns out engineers by the boatload. But they’re the wrong color.
Trump also said he wanted more people from Norway. But why should that matter? Didn’t the Trump administration claim it was looking for highly-skilled immigrants? This comment speaks volumes about Trump’s ignorance.
Most Norwegians don’t want to immigrate to the United States. Some of them might want to come and see Hollywood and Disneyland. But when their visas are up, most of them are more than happy to hurry back to their comfortable middle-class lives in Norway, with universal healthcare, free college education, and generous pension plans. They don’t want to immigrate to America because their country has a higher standard of living. (Plus, they don’t have to worry about their kids getting shot at school.)
Most of the people who want to immigrate to America are from black and brown countries because their economies are less stable. And even that’s slowly changing, as I have written before. Many Indian techies are now choosing to stay in India or return home after getting their education here because of the growing local tech scene and improving the standard of living. And when they go back, they’re taking their brain power with them. That’s America’s loss.
Of course, if Trump cracked open a book or a policy paper, he would know this. But instead, he listens to advisers like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller who support a white nationalist agenda. (Former Attorney General and neo-Confederate Jeff Session was also in favor of limiting legal immigration.) Bannon expressly stated this on his defunct XM radio show when he complained about the number of Asian CEOs in Silicon Valley.
“When two-thirds or three-quarters of the C.E.O.s in Silicon Valley are from South Asia or from Asia, I think . . . ” said Bannon. “A country is more than an economy. We’re a civic society.”
Bannon’s numbers were off. Sixty percent of Silicon Valley CEOs are white. But even if Bannon’s was right, it shouldn’t matter. But it does, if you want to maintain white America’s racial hegemony, like Bannon and Trump. That’s the real meaning behind Make America Great Again.
So please Mr. Kolfage, please don’t tell me Republicans are in favor of legal immigration when I know it’s not true. And you would too if you did a little research.
