I grew up in Europe and Africa, so my American experience is somewhat different than most Black Americans. Still, I can’t wrap my brain around the whole Greek thing. (It doesn’t exist in other countries.) As you mentioned, you regularly hear stories of students being physically and sexually assaulted to enter these orgs. Having said that, I know many people in Black Greek orgs, who do great work, but there is a dark side to these groups. A Black woman told me that they have funds and lawyers on tap to regularly settle wrongful death and hazing lawsuits.

As for the racism in the white ones, that continues to be a problem. There is no reason why white kids are still being busted for this stuff. Don’t they do orientation training and warn them?

They had a scandal in 2016, where a Sigma Nu frat at the Univ. of Oklahoma was busted for singing a racist song. The school handled it admirably, the chapter was shut down and their house was sold. But this year, another incident happened at OU!

By the way, I read an in-depth article about Sigma Nu, it detailed the insane torture techniques kids went through to join the fraternity. But according to the article, that frat is very highly represented on Wall St. and in the financial sector. One member said that if you make it in, you’re set for life in that sector. Another person said just put you’re a member of SN on your resume and you’re guaranteed the job!
