Jack Dorsey Pandered to Right-Wingers, They Still Came After Him

There is a certain amount of schadenfreude (taking pleasure in other’s suffering) at watching the tweeter-in-chief threaten to go after Twitter. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has bent over backward for right-wingers.
Unfortunately, he listened to the lies about tech companies having a liberal bias and has avoided cracking down on right-wing commenters. Unfortunately, this has led to an increased crackdown on anyone who’s not conservative.
I have personal experience with this. After junior Karen Tomi Lahren released another brain fart, I tweeted at her that she was “acting like a bimbo.” What I meant by the comment was that she was smarter than that and pretending to be dumb.
Within an hour, I received a message from Twitter saying they were censoring my post, and if I repeated the behavior, my account would be deleted. It had a chilling effect because from then on, I refused to say anything about Lahren.
This is the ultimate goal of right-wing criticism of social media. They want to be allowed to say whatever they want, and everyone else censored. It’s the same Jedi mind trick they played on the mainstream media. For decades, they accused the mainstream media of having a liberal bias and got them to believe it. Now supposedly liberal outlets, such as The New York Times and CNN, go out of their way to showcase right-wing views, no matter how extreme they are.
There is no liberal bias on tech platforms. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a techno-fascist who tolerates neo-Nazis on his platform and schmoozes with Trump and Rupert Murdoch. He’s firmly in the Trump camp and wants to help him win again in 2020. Facebook also helped Cambridge Analytica with data that crafted a pro-Trump propaganda campaign in 2016.

Left-wing monitoring organization Media Matters recently lambasted Zuckerberg in a May 28 article.
“Last year, Politico reported that Zuckerberg had connected quietly with conservative commentators, media executives, and politicians in a series of private meetings. Those of us on the outside should see this for what it is. As persistent as the Silicon Valley liberal stereotype is, this isn’t Zuckerberg meeting with his ideological opposites. This is Zuckerberg in his element, with his friends, getting ready to reelect the president. That’s who Mark Zuckerberg is, and it’s why he’s been giving Trump a pass this whole time,” said Parker Malloy.
And data shows right-wingers are flourishing on social media.
“According to CrowdTangle, a data-analytics firm owned by Facebook, content from conservative news organizations dominates Facebook and often outperforms content from straightforward news organizations,” said a May 29 CNN story.
Also, the top two political publishers on Facebook were conservative Ben Shapiro and Breitbart, a loathsome alt-right cesspool.
“Ben Shapiro, the prominent conservative news personality, generated more than 25 million interactions over the past month on his page, accounting for 29% of the total share from US political media on Facebook, according to CrowdTangle,” said CNN.
However, while I was censored within hours, Trump is allowed to break the rules on Twitter. A tweet from the White House account recently said of the riots in Minnesota, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” That tweet was partially blocked because it violated Twitter’s standards.
But Trump has a history of racism and insults on Twitter such as accusing MSNBC host Joe Scarborough of murdering an intern and referring to him as “Psycho Joe.” Why hasn’t Trump’s account been deleted? How many chances is he going to get?
Dorsey is obviously treating Trump and other right-wingers with kid gloves, but Trump recently signed an executive order that threatens to punish social media sites. However, the order is nebulous and no one seems to know what it actually does. Some critics claim the executive order is merely symbolic.
“The order is likely to be hamstrung in court, and perhaps even overturned, for myriad reasons. But the fight is the point: It lets Trump show his supporters and fans that he’s taking on ‘liberals’ in Silicon Valley,” said Vox.
Unfortunately, no matter what Dorsey does, it will never be enough. Trump won’t be happy until social media sites give him total power and allow him to lie at will.
Growing up in a rough neighborhood taught me a long time ago never to give in to bullies. Dorsey needs to learn that lesson too.
